- Retailer listings show that a drive-less Playon!HD2 - useful if streaming content from a NAS - costs £130 while a 1TB-equipped model arrives at £175 and a 2TB jobbie at £215.
- Jun 19, 2009 Tried the new beta firmware and the playback has improved hugely. 1080/24p now plays back flawlessly however, the media library needs a complete overhaul. The sooner AC Ryan fix this the better for us all! Also, I ripped a couple of my Blu Rays as ISO images but the media player will not play them (invalid file).
Unofficial firmware If you want to use new firmware, you should follow these steps: 1. Extract install.img from.zip file 2. Copy install.img to the root directory of a USB flash drive and connect it to PlayOn!HD 3. In PlayOn!HD enter Setup - System Update - System Upgrade 4. Now PlayOn!HD will reboot and start flashing, so DON'T DO ANYTHING!
In order to help AC Ryan’s users, Softpedia has gathered in a single list all the files needed by each one of the producer’s Playon! media players, namely all drivers and firmware versions.
As for the drivers, there are 3 available packages that are compatible with Mac and Linux platforms, as well as with both 32- and 64-bit variants of Microsoft’s Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 operating systems.
To be clearer, these downloadable packages are made by Realtek and provide the wireless-N USB dongle drivers for each of the mentioned OSes.
When it comes to firmware, these files are to be installed regardless of OS, and most of the devices have two available editions: European and Asian (so be careful what firmware edition you download).
In addition to that, the procedure for installing them on the Playon! devices is quite the same for every player. Copy the “install.img” file from within the downloadable archive onto the root folder of a USB drive, connect it to the unit, go to Setup Menu → System → USB Upgrade, and approve to start the update.
In this drivers and firmware list you will find AC Ryan’s Playon! HD, HD2, HD3, and HD 3D players, as well as the Playon! HD Mini, HD Mini 2, and HD Mini 3 devices. Moreover, the Playon! HD Essential, DVR HD, and DVR TV products are also included.
That being said, download AC Ryan PlayOn! Media Player Firmware/Driver for the proper device, take into account the above-mentioned aspects, and keep your media player updated.
.enable 1080p playback, choose the HDMI audio output format, connect to a network (Wi-Fi or cable) and upgrade the firmware/GUI from a USB device. Playon! – Engage Your Senses
We were suitably impressed by A.C. Ryan's Playon!HD and Playon!HD mini media players, particularly their ability to playback almost any media format ever conceived.
Unfortunately, the interface, while functional, certainly lacked a little polish. In fact, we said that a firmware update couldn't come soon enough.
Well, it looks as though our prayers have been answered just 48 hours later as the manufacturer has today released a new update that refreshes the user interface and introduces a few new features.
The new firmware replaces the main menu and tweaks the general user interface. Even the bland loading screens have been changed.

On top of the visual updates, several new features have been added, including support for the HFS+ file system and Dolby TrueHD passthrough, as well as improved support for SHOUTcast internet radio. As promised, integration with Yet Another Movie Jukebox has also been included to help manage those unwieldy movie collections.
The firmware updates, along with a complete list of changes, are available now for the Playon!HD and Playon!HD mini directly from A.C. Ryan's website.
